Every May long weekend I celebrate the opening of the Kitsilano pool. Then it rains til July. I still swim during the rainy months, alongside the triathletes, all cozy in their wet suits. But the crowds don’t roll in til the weather warms. The second Sunday in September, I mourn the closing of the pool, right when we’re getting our best weather of the year. Local weather experts are saying that summer in this region is getting later thanks to climate change. If summer is so slow to start, why not open the pool a little later and keep it open through September? The UBC outdoor pool stays open through October.
Dear Park Board, will you please consider extending the outdoor swimming season? Pay no attention to the fact that it’s supposed to rain today. I forecast ideal pool weather for at least another week.
