There is a fabulous celebration of food going on in Vancouver until World Food Day (October 16th). Sustenance: Feasting on Art and Culture is presented by a number of great groups working on food issues; Get Local (a partnered project of FarmFolk/CityFolk and the Vancouver Farmers Market, and the BC Farmers’ Market Nutrition & Coupon Project. The main event will be held at the city’s most artistic and historical community centre: The Roundhouse. Take in food related art exhibits, speakers, films, cooking classes with a local chef and food preservation workshops, a pumpkin pie eating contest, music, a pocket market and activities for the kids, like piñata making and breaking. One particular event caught my attention: “OHHHHH FOOD!” billed as “A naughty night of food with forbidden fruit wine, saucy storytelling, erotic culinary poetry reading, and special sexy production” complete with dirty fruits and vegetables!
There are also a number of enticing satellite events. The Westside Food Security Collaborative and Kitsilano Neighbourhood House will be hosting one of them this Wednesday evening: a community potluck with yours truly as the guest speaker. I will be speaking on west side food issues but will be sure to sprinkle in some artistic tidbits in honour of the theme.
