When I worked for City Farmer we ran a contest for the best food garden in Vancouver. We visited a lot of gardens and in the back corners of many yards we found “show pigeons.” Back then, that was a fancy name for chickens. In those days, it was illegal to have chickens in the city. Not anymore. But this fancy bird really is a show pigeon. The Jacobin originated in Asia and is known for its stunning feather hood. The pigeon obviously inspired the costume designer who created the hood worn by Geraldine Chaplin in Dr. Zhivago. Thanks to Green Renaissance for bringing this hooded show bird to my attention.
