I took a first aid course through work this week. I hadn’t had a refresher since my days as a lifeguard. A few things have changed. For example, when doing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), we used to do five chest compressions to one breath. Now it’s 30 compressions to two breaths. I was surprised at how much I remembered about basic first aid though, tending to cuts, sprains and fractures, anaphylactic shock, and more. You never know when or where you might need the training. As if to remind us of that fact, at lunch we witnessed a car accident and rushed to the scene to tend to the victims. Mostly the occupants in the two cars were shaken and fortunately, the fire department arrived a few minutes later. I noted that they were doing some of the same checks we had just learned in the session. Grateful to have all this training fresh in my mind.
