Fuming Rights

I came home late from class last night and choked my way through a hallway of smoke to get to my suite. My neighbour is a chain smoker. At the Annual General Meeting, the owners voted down a bylaw that would have banned smoking anywhere in the building, including in individual suites. I should say it was a handful of owners who voted against the new bylaw, many abstained, many of the owners don’t even live here. I understand the concern about violating someone’s rights, especially on their own property, but when that activity drifts into common areas and under neighbouring doors, then it is no longer just about their rights. Banning smoking would show a concern for everyone’s health, including the smokers.
