As associate producer of the Vancouver Garden Show in 2005, I had a large palette: fifty acres of open green space at VanDusen Gardens with 10,000 visitors streaming in over four days. In addition to handling all the media for the show, I also coordinated the Green Garden exhibit. I worked with architects at Hotson Bakker and landscape architect, Randy Sharp of Sharp & Diamond to design the showcase of green technologies, including state-of-the-art irrigation systems, rain water collection, composting units, living walls and native plant displays. It was deemed a great success when the legendary landscape architect, Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, held a spontaneous class beside the green roof. Not long afterwards, Sharp and Oberlander were approached to design the green roof and native plant landscape for VanDusen’s new visitor centre, a LEED Platinum building.
