Evergreen has launched its urban fruit orchard on the Great Northern Way Campus, the home of their regional Vancouver office. They have planted 30 locally adapted apple trees, dozens of strawberries, raspberries, huckleberries and more, all in containers, transforming the mix of industrial buildings, barren concrete and gravel into a lush mobile orchard.
As their web site says: “Urban orchards are growing in popularity across North America and Europe as effective land management strategies to enhance community food security, increase the urban forest canopy and connect communities with nature and local food production.”
The orchard will serve as research and programming space for edible landscapes. Evergreen will hold a number of community events in the coming months to connect their neighbours to this new, local and fruitful source.
