Granville Island – Gourmet Grub or Food Hub?

Wed. June 23rd, 6pm to 8pm

A food hub is the emerging concept coming out of food security circles. It is a center of food activity and might include a farmers’ market, community gardens, commercial kitchen where small producers can process their foods or where people can gather to prepare meals together. Some food hubs even have greenhouses, cold storage and distribution areas. On this walking tour we will view Granville Island through the food hub lens. What range of foods do they offer? Is it affordable and accessible to all? We’ll also compare it to other food hub models, including the proposed New City Market here in Vancouver. On our walkabout, we’ll visit Edible BC in the public market, a couple other key Island retailers, local producers and brewers and discuss the Island’s waste management practices (yes they compost!). We’ll also stop at the community garden on the outskirts and wind up at the fish docks.$35. To register email: info@gardenheart.ca
